The Birth of Payton | Springfield IL Birth Photographer

Married for over eight years, Payton’s parents always dreamed of having a child.  In the five years preceding her birth there was a constant longing that God would bless them with a child.  After medical interventions turned unsuccessful, they were just about to try more advanced procedures when God intervened and brought hope into their lives with a pregnancy.  Upon hearing their amazing journey to pregnancy, I was so excited and honored to share in the birth of their first child.

In the weeks leading up to Payton’s due date it was pretty clear that she would make her arrival into this world a little earlier than expected.   At her 37 week appointment baby was so low that her doctor told Payton’s mom to expect her within the next couple weeks.   Another week went by and I was on high alert waiting for “the call.”   Every night as I laid down to sleep I made sure my phone was on loud ringer.    A week went by and another exciting update… “80% effaced and at 2cm dilated.”   I knew it was coming soon so I had my camera battery constantly charged up and my bag ready to go.   At 1:34am on September 22nd,  I received the text that is so fun to receive  “My water just broke and we are about to head to the hospital!”   With my husband working shift work, I always have a sitter on hand in case I should be called in case he is working.  Fortunately for us, he was on his way home from work just as I received the update!  I shoved down some cereal and anxiously waited for the next update.   An hour later, they were checked in and the contractions were 4 minutes apart.   With the baby hanging out so low for the past couple weeks, I knew that with the baby was going to make a speedy appearance and I decided to make my way over to the hospital.

Upon arriving to their room, there was a crazy hustle going on with 2 nurses helping mom to get comfortable as they stared at the heart rate monitor.  A third nurse was trying to ultrasound moms belly.   Poor mom had just experienced several pretty rough contractions in a row and babies heart rate was dropping and gave both the nursing staff and the family a scare.  Fortunately, with a little adjusting, they were able to make the baby more comfortable and her heart rate was back to normal.   Prior to getting to the hospital I knew that it was a goal of moms to experience a natural birth without an epidural.   Never having experienced natural childbirth myself (my daughter was born via c-section) I cannot even imagine the pain that she was going through.   I can say though that there were times during her labor that were extremely hard to be a bystander at.  The miracle of birth is an amazing one, but seeing a woman in such discomfort is not easy to watch.

Fortunately Payton was ready to go and with a couple slow and steady hours of deep breathing and comforting by her husband, mom was ready to bring her baby girl into this world.  We all knew it was time when mom insisted “I HAVE to push…” and push she did for only 35 minutes (very short for a first time mom.)  What was most amazing to me was the strength and endurance that both mom and dad showed through the labor.   Many times it would have been easy for dad to say “just get the epidural” instead of trying to ease his wife’s pain naturally.  Instead, he stayed strong to what she wanted, held her hand , encouraged her to breath and said “you can do this.”   Between the two of them, their faith and love got them through it together to bring a beautiful 8 pound baby girl into this world and fulfill their dream of a child.

When I capture births I also see a “theme” some out over the course of the day.   Having met Abi’s parents during their maternity session, I knew that there was a lot of love between her mom and dad.  What I got to see over the course of her birth was that not only was this little girl coming into loving parents, but a loving extended family as well.

You can view some of this love in Abi’s birth video here.

I could not have been more excited to share in the birth of Kim and James’ baby girl.   Having trusted Kim to watch my own little girl from time to time, I was so excited to see her bring her own little girl into this world.  While an induction was planned for early the morning of January 8th, I received a text from James early the morning of January 7th “Going to MMC.  We will let you know how dialated she is…”   I was ready to go.  Unfortunately, little Maddie wasn’t.   Kim and James were sent home as it was too early to be admitted.  Later that day, around 6:30pm “5cm…just got to MMC.”   As I arrived, they were  giving Kim her epidural and fortunately after that she was much more comfortable.  Munching on popsicles and chatting on the phone,  it seemed as though this was going to be a relatively easy labor for Kim.

Around 9:15pm she was checked and dilated to 9cm…we were getting close.   The doctor came in around 9:40pm and decided to help the delivery along and broke Kim’s water.  This is when the mood in the room changed.  First, the doctor has discovered meconium in the water, so the NICU team was brought over just in case.   Then, much like during the labor of my little girl, little Maddie’s heart rate kept dropping, particularly as Kim would role to her back.  Adding to the stress was the fact that a little over a year ago, this family had experienced the loss of their angel babies Jacob and James, twin boys who came into and left this world much too earlier.  By 10pm, the doctor made the decision to prep the operating room “just in case.”    While a c-section, wasn’t in the plan, getting Maddie out safely was the number one priority.   Fortunately Kim was able to labor on her side and little Maddie was beginning to make her way out.  For the final pushes Kim rolled onto her back and around 11:30pm a happy, healthy, beautiful little girl made her entrance into this world.  The happiness of the room the moment she first cried was amazing.   It was as though everyone had been holding their breathe and let it out all at the same moment.   What an amazing story to be able to tell through images.

The Birth of Madelyn | Springfield IL Birth Photographer

As the days leading up to Madelyn’s due date came and went, I began to wonder how long this little girl was planning to stay inside her mommy.  The week after her due date Madelyn’s mommy went in for her appointment and it seemed like there would finally be an eviction notice given the following week (at 42 weeks!)  The very next day, late in the late afternoon, I received a text message from dad “Hi Vicky, we think labor might be starting.”    Due to the fact that this birth was taking place in Decatur (about 30-40 minutes from Springfield, where my births usually are) I started getting prepared to jump in the car at any minute.   I was ready to go.   While sitting down to eat dinner, I received a second text,  “She’s dilated to 4cm!”   I shoved down my salad and was out the door.  I arrived around 7pm and poor mom was in a lot of pain and very uncomfortable.   After her epidural she was very relieved of her pain and everything seems to slow down a little.

We tried to get some rest, but with family coming in from all over, it seemed pretty busy.   Around midnight mom was dilated to 9cm and by 1am she was complete and we all thought this little girl was going to show her face at any time.  As the minutes turned into hours, poor mom and dad were exhausted.   Around 5:30am, I was starting to feel really drowsy myself so I ran to the 24-hour McDonalds to grab a coffee and a quick something to eat.   While getting on to the elevator I get the text from Dad “nurse said they are going to get her in stirrups and start pushing soon.”    Finally, we all thought…we will meet miss Madelyn.   After being up for hours on end though, this mom had quite the challenge as her bag water just did not want to break.   When the doctor arrived around 7:30am she broke her water and from there on out everything started to speed up.  An hour later, healthy, happy Madelyn made her appearance!

The Birth of Bailey | Springfield IL Birth Photographer

When Bailey’s mom contacted me about photographing the birth of her second child, I told her that I would love to, but that if the baby decided to come early we might run into a problem as I was planning to go to St. Louis for Thanksgiving weekend.   I would most certainly drive back from St. Louis if that happened, but it would tack on a 2 hour drive until I could be there.   I received a text a couple weeks before Bailey’s due date, November 26th “Induction tomorrow at 5am!”   Her fluid level was low and they were concerned about little Bailey, so her doctor decided on an early induction.  The good news was that I wasn’t in St. Louis, the bad news was this was the one day my husband was working an 11pm-7am shift, so he wasn’t able to watch our daughter.  Fortunately, with photographing births I have a wide array of folks that help me out when I get unexpectedly called and I was able to drop my daughter off that evening to stay at a friends home.

The next morning at 6:05am I received a text that they were settled into their room and she was at 3cm without any medication.  Due to the fact that it is her second child, I decided to go over to the hospital early.   Throughout the morning as she slowly progressed more and more family began to arrive.  Bailey was so very blessed to have so many people who couldn’t wait to meet her.   Once the late morning hit, the doctor decided to give her some medication to assist her progress.  Hour after hour she was getting closer and closer to making her arrive.     Finally at 2:17pm (within 5 minutes of the exact time in which her older brother came into the world years ago) Bailey arrived.

If you have a couple minutes, you should watch here slideshow video.  If for no other reason that to see her adorable older brother singing “Hush little baby” to her…how stinking adorable!!
